Detoxing, or removing the harmful and toxic substances from your body, seems to be the latest health trend. Toxins are harmful chemicals that have an effect on the way our bodies operate and maintain themselves. Numerous companies are marketing products that claim to rid your body of toxins, specifically to aid in weight loss. This begs the question, what are we doing to avoid toxins in the first place? First, we must think about a detox as more than just a juice fast for weight loss. Toxins are in the air we breathe, the foods we eat and the creams and lotions we apply to our skin. Reducing our toxic load is crucial to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Below are 5 ways I lighten my toxic load.

Eat organic food. The chemicals sprayed on foods, make it into our bodies when we consume them. Choosing a product with a lower amount of pesticides helps protect our health. Organic items are farmed in conditions that are lower in pesticides. Another option is to grow your own! Many vegetables can be grown in a small space, even in pots on your patio.

Use natural cleaning products. What’s the use in eating organic foods and daily exercise if we use carcinogens to clean our homes? Common household cleaning products contain cancer causing agents, irritate airways and cause asthma attacks. Instead use natural products like baking soda and vinegar. Some natural essential oils have antibacterial properties and give off a pleasant aroma.

Stop burning candles and using scented plug-ins. Many scented candles contain paraffin wax. When heated, paraffin wax emits benzene and toluene, which are highly toxic carcinogens. These same carcinogens are found in diesel fumes. The artificial fragrances also irritate airways and are linked to asthma and allergy development instead diffuse fragrant essential oils like wild orange, peppermint, and clove. In addition to the pleasant smell, the natural properties of the oil have healing effects on the body.

Fix your GI health. Your gut determines what nutrients are absorbed and which are not. It also regulates hormones and excretes toxins. If your gut flora is out of whack this can lead to a buildup of toxins and harmful bacteria. This can lead to Irritable bowel syndrome, yeasts, and parasite growth.
